The Dame Silvia Cartwright Lecture presents Justice Shiranee Tilakawardane of the Supreme Court of S
Auckland Women Lawyers’ Association and the New Zealand Association of Women Judges, with support from ADLS, are presenting a lecture on Friday 10 May 2013, to be given by honoured guest Justice Shiranee Tilakawardane.
Justice Tilakawardane was the first woman in Sri Lanka to be appointed to the High Court, the Admiralty Court and the Court of Appeal. She was appointed to the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in 2003. She has received numerous awards for her contribution to human rights including the Sakshi of India Women’s International Award and the Shakti Award by the Canadian International Development Agency.
Justice Tilakawardane will speak on a multisectorial approach to issues relating to women and children.
The lecture will be followed by a formal dinner with speaker Justice Teresa Doherty of Ireland.

After Dinner Speaker, Justice Doherty, is a Parole Commissioner for Northern Ireland, a part time chairman of Appeal Services, and a member of the Commonwealth Reference Group for the promotion of the Rights of Women and the Girl Child. She has received recognition for her work including a CBE and an Honorary Doctor of Laws. Justice Doherty comes to New Zealand thanks to support from the New Zealand Law Foundation.
