Synopsis

Despite being one of the inevitabilities of life, tax (and its prudent management) is something to which some lawyers don’t pay enough attention.

This failure can result not only in the imposition of penalties but also in lost opportunities for making savings.

With presenters spanning the adviser, intermediary and regulator spectrum, this seminar will provide an update on the world of tax for those in sole, small or medium-sized practice.

Learning outcomes

  • Refresh and enhance your knowledge of the tax implications of how your practice is structured. Revisit and other common tax issues such as what can (and cannot) be claimed in respect of income splitting, vehicles and entertainment.
  • Become updated about the revised provisional tax rules, and ways to manage various tax obligations and the cashflow impact on your business.
  • Gain insights into Inland Revenue’s evolution and its capture and use of information.

This session will be most relevant to sole practitioners, barristers and owners of small to medium-sized practices. Those in larger practices may find it useful.

Chris Cunniffe

Chris Cunniffe is the Chief Executive of Tax Management NZ (TMNZ), the country’s first and largest tax pooling intermediary, established to assist taxpayers manage their provisional tax payments without falling foul of IRD’s unforgiving interest and penalty costs. 

Chris is a career tax professional, having held senior roles at Inland Revenue,  and leading the tax functions at Air New Zealand and BNZ prior to joining TMNZ in 2011. 

He is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and has served on their National Tax Advisory Group for nearly 20 years.

Fraser is one of three directors of Elevate CA – a CA firm specialising in accounting, tax and business advice for owner managed businesses, particularly professional service firms.  Fraser has a wide spread of clients – including legal firms ranging from sole barristers through partnerships and incorporated practices with multiple shareholders.

Fraser understands the pain points lawyers face around technology, increased compliance, attracting and retaining motivated staff - and the reality that lawyers typically end up in business not because they have a particular passion and affinity for business per se – but because they are good at what they do professionally.  

Fraser lives in Tutukaka – but divides his working week between Auckland and Northland.
