Sab Button error messages
Details of the SAB button files
The SAB button requires certain files to run, under certain configurations, as detailed below:
SABSVR95.EXE
- The Windows 95/98/ME button server program. If Legal Forms is networked, run this program on the machine that the button is plugged into, in order to get the button listening.
SABSVRNT.EXE
- As above, but the Windows NT/2000/XP version. On these operating systems, it will also be necessary to run this program under a standalone (single license) configuration.
SABTST95.EXE
- When the SAB server program is listening, and Legal Forms cannot open without returning a button error (listed below), run this program to find the button over the network. If successfully found, the machine on which it is run will be reconfigured with details of how to find the button, so that Legal Forms can open without problems.
NetBIOS Error 12h
On startup, or when attempting to final print, you receive the following message:
- A network error was encountered (NetBIOS error: 12h)
- Button Lock failure: (Failed to obtain access to the button server)
Cause: The button server is not running.
Resolution: Start the button server program on the machine that the button is connected to. This is either sabsvrnt.exe for Windows NT/2000/XP, or sabsvr95.exe for Windows 95/98/ME. When running successfully the SAB Server should display "Listening…".
NetBIOS Error 23h
On startup, or when attempting to final print, you receive the following message:
- A network error was encountered NetBIOS error: 23h)
- Button Lock failure: (Failed to obtain access to the button server)
Cause: Network problems are preventing communication with the button
Resolution: Ensure that your network cable is connected, and that all network settings and configurations are correct. Also, if necessary install NetBEUI as an additional protocol, and if required set this as the default protocol instead of TCP/IP.
(102) A button error was encountered
On startup, or when attempting a final print, you receive the following message:
- (102) A button error was encountered
SAB Button Module not found (or attached Printer switched off)
(Software Authorisation Button not found.
Please ensure a Button Module is connected.)
Cause: The network type is set to 0 (standalone), and there is no button attached locally.
Resolution: Either change to a network type of 1 (if your button is networked), or attach the button to your local machine if running standalone. System / Registration / Configuration
SAB Module not found
When trying to run the SAB server (either sabsvrnt.exe or sabsvr95.exe), the window repeatedly displays:
- Initialising SAB… SAB Module not found
Cause: The button is not plugged into the back of the server on which the program is running.
Resolution: Plug the button in, or run the SAB server program on the machine that the button is plugged into.
*Note: If the button is plugged into the machine, and you still receive this error message, you may find it necessary to move the button to another machine.

Errors on Opening (Some as above - others detailed below)
Can't open database CONFIG
Resolution: Run the program "Repair Data Database", and log in as system to fix this error. Ensure that no other users are running Legal Forms when trying to run this program.
ReAttach Tables
On opening, you get the message: Please enter the location of LFDATA.MDB
Cause:Generally, you have performed a network installation (installing only the main program), and Legal Forms needs to know where to find the datafile.
Resolution: Enter the location that you moved the datafile to from the first PC installation, and click OK to continue. Once complete, all forms created on all machines should be accessible.
Legal Forms opens in "Read Only" mode
Cause: You have installed Legal Forms on more machines than you are licensed for.
Resolution: Either remove the program from excess machine's, or purchase more licenses up to the number that you now require.
*Note: Legal Forms is licensed per machine, not per user. If you are moving the program from one PC to another, you will need to reset the user count before running the program on any machine. To do this, log in as system, then click, System, Registration, User Count tab, and press the reset button. This will reset the number back down to 0, and increment it by one each time a licensed machine runs the program, up to the allowed number of licenses.
Initial Setup
Completing the Registration Details
On the first installation of Legal Forms you will be prompted to enter your registration details. These must be entered in exactly as detailed on the supplied registration sheet. The fields, Firm, Account, Button ID, Nbr Users, and Registration cannot be altered at any stage in the future, as Legal Forms will no longer function correctly. Any other details can be changed as necessary.
Setting the correct Network Type
Please see the following table for details of what the network type should be set to for various different operating systems, and license numbers:
|
Operating System |
Standalone* (single licence) |
Standalone* (single licence) |
|
XWindows 95/98/ME |
0 |
1 |
|
Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 |
1 |

*Note: Standalone implies that the button is plugged into the machine that Legal Forms is installed on. If the button is connected to a different machine (but you still only have a single license), the network type will need to be set to 1.
The network type is set in System, Registration, Configuration, Network Type.
Law Firm Acting field
To configure Legal Forms to automatically complete the "Law Firm Acting" field on the back page of most forms, while logged in as System, select System, Registration, Configuration. Enter your company details in the Law Firm Acting field, and they will automatically be entered into the form upon printing. go to top of page
Problems printing
Before checking anything else, ensure that you have configured Legal Forms to use your printer properly. To do this, while logged in as system, select System, Printers. Click the Set Printer button, followed by (on the Page tab), choosing "Use Specific Printer", and then clicking the Printer button. Choose the appropriate printer, and click OK three times to finish. Legal Forms will then process each form in turn, readjusting them to fit your printer (you will see the progress in the bottom-left corner of the screen). This should cure the majority of printing problems. If it does not, please try updating your printer drivers, or if you still experience problems, try using HP LaserJet 4 Plus drivers as an alternative solution.
Problems while using the package
Word extension documents don't print out
The most common cause of this is attempting a draft print when in print preview mode. This is not the recommended method of draft printing, and will never print the Word extension. The correct method of printing any document (either in Draft, Final, or Copy), is to print via the Final Print screen and select the Draft box if necessary. This will then correctly print out any Word extensions.
Deed of Lease doesn't print all pages
If only half of the Deed of Lease prints, this is because you are trying to print the document from within the print preview page (producing a draft copy). The design of the Deed of Lease is such that it prints out in two sections, and will only print correctly via the Final Print screen.
OLE error message
This error message is caused by Norton AntiVirus 2001/2002, which by default has a feature called "Script Blocking" enabled. To prevent this error happening, open the Norton AntiVirus program and disable the Script Blocking option.
