Practising Certificates

All lawyers must hold a current practising certificate issued under the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006.
Lawyers can either hold a practising certificate as a barrister (in which case they are subject to the various rules governing barristers' conduct) or they may hold a practising certificate as a barrister and solicitor (in which case they are subject to all the rules governing barristers and solicitors).
A lawyer holding a practising certificate as a barrister and solicitor must:

  • be employed in a firm of barristers and solicitors, or
  • be a partner of a firm of solicitors, or
  • be a sole practitioner, or
  • be employed by an organisation other than a firm of barristers and solicitors.

Lawyers should ensure they are aware of the rules governing their particular mode of practice.

Please contact New Zealand Law Society to arrange your practising certificate.
