Synopsis

The Burning Issues Forum 2017 will once again scorch, sizzle and burn with the hottest topics in employment law this year. Covering such searing issues as the question of “availability” pursuant to s 67D of the Employment Relations Act 2000, employees’ obligations to disclose criminal charges, the incandescent problems of hurt and humiliation, redeployment and penalties together with the blazing heat of the proposed pay equity legislation, the seventeenth annual forum will send temperatures soaring for those attending.

Learning Outcomes

  • Gain a clearer understanding of recent judgment s made in respect of employees’ disclosure obligations for example arising out of the Supreme Court case of ASG v Harlene Hayne, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Otago [2017] NZSC 59 to their employers and the complex question of the new “availability” provisions where not everything has been clarified by the Courts at this stage.
  • Learn more about hurt and humiliation, redeployment and penalties, issues often central to employment cases, and how these cases have been treated by the Employment Court this year.
  • Understand better the possible implications of the newly introduced legislation relating to pay equity, the issues that remain unanswered and how claims of inequality might be dealt with.
